To sign up, simply speak to your workplace payroll team to see if your employer offers a Payroll Giving scheme. They will guide you through the process and ask you to complete a form.

Anyone in the UK paying tax through PAYE can take advantage of Payroll Giving and enjoy immediate tax relief on their donations.

How does Payroll Giving Work?

Setting up Payroll Giving should be very straightforward. You will need to decide how much you want to donate each month. There is no minimum or maximum amount required. Higher-rate taxpayers benefit even more from Payroll Giving compared to Gift Aid, as charities cannot claim back tax above the basic rate through Gift Aid. The income tax on your donation is directed to CLEFT rather than to HMRC.

  • Basic Tax Rate (20%): For every £1 you earn, 20p goes to tax. If you pledge £10 per month, CLEFT receives the full £10, but only £8 is deducted from your net pay.
  • Higher Tax Rate (40%): A £10 monthly pledge means only £6 is deducted from your net pay.
  • Highest Tax Rate (45%): A £10 pledge results in just £5.50 being deducted.
